This article is less for how to calculate Texas Holdem odds and more for understanding the principle of it. Realizing the relation between odds and playing Texas Holdem is crucial for having any chance in winning at this game or even minimizing your loses.

Texas Holdem, unlike classical poker, is played with five communal cards which mean there are five cards in the game which are visible for all players. What is opens is a possibility of calculating winning odds by considering the number of players, the two cards in your hand and the open cards on the table.
The five cards are opened in 3 stages – In the first round of betting there are three cards and a certain amount of people playing. In the second round there are four open cards and the number of people still playing can be changed. In the last round there are five cards open and again, the number of players can be changed. In each step the odds calculation needs to be adjusted to the situation in hand.

There are varies calculating tools, some free and some not, some are available online and some requires downloading to your computer. If you’re a beginner in Texas Holdem put some time in trying to understand how to calculate odds. Even if you end up using auto calculating tools you will still have to understand what they mean.

The River

The river is the last out of three stages in Texas Holdem where the communal cards are placed open on the table. In the river there is one card opened from the deck which is placed on the table facing up. This makes it five open communal cards all together at this stage of the game. After the river the Small blind opens the final round of betting.

The Turn

The Turn is the second of three stages in Texas Holdem where the communal cards are placed open on the table. In the turn there is one card opened from the deck which is placed on the table facing up. This makes it four open communal cards all together at this stage of the game. After the turn the Small blind opens the third round of betting.

The Flop

The flop is the first of three stages in Texas Holdem where the communal cards are placed open on the table. In the flop there are 3 cards opened from the deck, all facing up. After these 3 cars were placed the Small blind opens the second round of betting.

Communal cards

In Texas Holdem, and other poker variation such as Omaha poker for example, there are cards that are referred to as communal cards. The communal cards are cards that are visible for all players and that can be used by all players. In Texas Holdem there are 5 communal cards which can be used by any of the players while combining them with the 2 cards in each player’s hands.
